Delta Bye-election: Dafinone Heads to Tribunal

Dafinone heads to Election Petition Tribunal
The last appears not to have been heard of the National Assembly poll in Delta Central as the Democratic Peoples Party (DPP) has vowed to contest the outcome of the poll at the Election Petition Tribunal.
The DPP senatorial candidate for Delta Central, Chief Ede Dafinone is contesting the victory of Mr. Emmanuel Aguariavwodo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Delta Central senatorial district.
In a statement issued on Thursday in Sapele, the DPP senatorial candidate described the April 12 bye- election as political denial perpetrated against Urhobo, the 5th largest ethnic group in Nigeria.
“There is little recognition of Urhobo at the federal and state levels in terms of appointments and positions. Similarly, the interference in the last election where the candidate foisted on the PDP in Delta State is again foisted and this time forcefully on the people of Delta Central”.
The DPP candidate who is not pleased with the result of the election where PDP was declared winner flayed the exercise which he alleged was not free and fair and was enmeshed in violence and intimidation of voters.
He condemned the reckless desperation, the sheer treachery and lawlessness of leaders of the PDP in the state. He also accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of overturning the rule of fairness and allocating victory to the PDP.
“We reject this outright robbery of the people’s will. We condemn this grievous injustice, this unconscionable mockery of all that is decent, of all that is fair and just. The army and INEC, both Federal Government institutions worked with the PDP’s candidate to ensure his victory. The PDP used the army to unleash terror on the people of Delta Central. For hours, gun shots rent the air and the people were clobbered. Also, the announced result shows PDP in first place. As if that is not bad enough, the result shows All Progressives Congress (APC) in second place with DPP the Populist Party in the third place. All that combines to make the whole result laughable” the statement said.
The statement said the party’s legal team had been told to head to the poll tribunal.
“As law abiding citizens, we intend to explore all legal means to ensure this sham of an election is cancelled. We shall be proceeding to the election petition tribunal to present our case” the statement added.

Delta Bye-election Was Selection says APC's Emerhor,

PRESS STATEMENT
Ladies and gentlemen of the press, I thank you all for coming. I want to use this medium to express my profound gratitude and appreciation to the entire Urhobo Nation for the massive support and love demonstrated towards me and my party APC in this collective responsibility of emancipating our people.
I hereby place it on record that NO bye-election took place in Delta Central on October 12th 2013. What took place was a sham calculated to select a senator, the first by any democracy in the world by the government and all its agencies including the INEC, the military and other security agencies working together to achieve this nefarious and predetermined outcome.
We therefore reject in its  totality the purported outcome and results as announced by  INEC. We hereby demand for a fresh election that will allow the people of Delta central to freely elect a candidate of their choice to fill the vacant senatorial seat.
Our rejection and demand for a fresh election is predicated on the following:
1.The whole environment was Militarized with road blocks where voters were intimidated to stay at home and clear of polling units. The Nigerian Army Supervised Snatching of ballot papers by the PDP Stalwarts and thugs with the Army giving them covering fire. In places that were not strongholds of the PDP, the INEC found every reason in the book to burgle the exercise, including but not limited to the lame excuse by the NYSC that their allowances for the training they received few days back and money for the voting exercise which they have not even conducted must be paid. The payment for training and election conduct is clearly within the purview of the government of the day and INEC for which they have been heavily funded by tax payers.
2 In PDP strongholds the military supervise the thumb printing of ballot papers in private homes PDP stalwart. For example thumb printing took place in the Deputy Governors residence, the PDP candidate Emmanuel Agwariavwado's house and one Chief John Oguma's house. This pattern repeated itself across the entire senatorial district.
3. In the very few areas where a semblance of election took place the exercise started at well over 3pm clearly outside the constitutional and electoral act provisions. The aim was to delay the exercise to give room for the PDP to manipulate the system in the dark of night which was what actually happened across board.
4. INEC failed to provide transportation for men and materials and left this critical responsibility to the Delta state government which provided them the opportunity to hijack and divert the materials.
5. INEC has regulations for movements at elections. The restriction of movement was not obeyed by the PDP stalwarts.  Serving members of the National and State Assemblies, Local Government Chairmen, Commissioners, Deputy Governor and other persons moved about with police escorts giving the voters the impression of being above the law and thereby intimidating them.
6.  Later at night, the military were used to take over the collation centre  depriving other party agents access to the collation centre except the PDP thereby allowing the PDP in connivance with INEC to allot figures to the various candidates as election results.
7. We have catalogued the gross electoral abuses; polling unit by polling unit, ward by ward and Local government by Local government and these shall be made available to the public very shortly.
Long Live the Urhobo Nation
Long Live Delta State
Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Delta Bye-election Should Be Cancelled, Says Dafinone

BEING THE TEXT OF A PRESS STATEMENT BY CHIEF EDE DAFINONE CALLING FOR CANCELLATION OF THE OCTOBER 12 ,2013 BYE- ELECTION RESULT FOR DELTA CENTRAL SENATORIAL DISTRICT.

Gentlemen of the Press,

Thank you for coming. As you are aware, I am the candidate of my party, the Democratic People’s Party (DPP) for the senatorial bye-election scheduled for yesterday, October 12, 2013. We are here today to tell the world that the people of Delta Central were yesterday violently denied the right to choose a senator of their own. The proposed election to elect a senator was a complete sham.

There was no election, as defined by our laws. The scale of impunity, assault, molestations and violence by the PDP, thugs/cultists and the supposed security agents was just unimaginable. The lopsided and partisan involvement of state security apparatuses in supporting the PDP and the brazen use of thugs to unleash violence and mayhem on our party members and the electorate is unprecedented. Thus there is now very serious concerns for the progress of our nascent democracy and diminishing hope for peace, unity and good governance of Nigeria now and in the immediate future.

The significant confidence brought into our elections in 2011 due to visible improvements on the 2003 and 2007 elections was completely wiped off yesterday. The PDP and the Government have yesterday sent, in no uncertain terms, a strong message that the security apparatus of this nation will foist the PDP on the nation at every cost. As was demonstrated yesterday in Urhobo land, security forces and the government will turn a blind eye to open violence and crimes against citizens and a section of the electorate perceived to be supporting other parties outside the PDP.

Because our agents were openly shot at and maimed yesterday, as it was in 2003 and 2007, we are able to say that the days where elections are gun wars are back. Because INEC officials and NYSC ad hoc personnel bluntly refused to go out to conduct the election in several places, we are also able to categorically say that government, through these agencies, decided the outcome of the election in a clearly premeditated manner. Because security personnel openly flogged and beat up our agents and supporters everywhere without justification, we are able to say that violent bias was used as a tool to coerce our supporters to abandon polling stations. Because in various communities security personnel watched, allowed, participated in and supervised the hijacking of ballot boxes and other election materials by PDP thugs and government officials, we are also able to say that the so-called election was rigged with clear government approval. Because INEC did not release or issue out election result sheets and other sensitive election materials in most places but 'results' somehow managed to emerged in favour of the PDP, we are able to say that the so-called results were made to suit the PDP even before any election. Because few electoral materials appeared as late as 3.30PM in the few places where a few INEC officials managed to reach, we are able to say that our people were deliberately excluded from the election since accreditation was meant to end by 12.00Noon. There was just no election as defined by our laws and common sense!

The point must be made that we do not expect perfect elections anywhere in the world. But we do expect that there will be improvements on past performances. This is just not the case here. What we had was resort to brute force to suppress the will of the people of Delta Central. Yes, it is often said that politicians tend to find faults to justify unsuccessful outcomes of the electoral bids. Ours is just clearly different. We did not lose an election. There has to be an election before we talk about winners and losers.

This is a clear case of naked criminality; not an election. It is a clear case of the government imposing Chief Emmanuel Agwariavwodo on Delta Central in the same manner and style he was imposed on his party. This is impossible with a truly independent INEC. Herein lies a clear and imminent danger for our democracy. Therefore, we reject whatever result announced by INEC as it is not a true reflection of the democratic will of our people. We call for an outright cancellation of the said election and any fake result arising from same.

Indeed, we are at a loss on why and how violence and external interference have to be brought into Delta central in the name of election. Delta Central electoral is largely the Urhobo people who have never been so marginalized at the national and state levels as we are today. The dearth of Urhobos at both Federal and State levels belies our position as the fifth largest ethnic nationality in Nigeria. That as a people we are not allowed freely elect our leaders is a further confirmation of the oppression of the Urhobo nation.

We in the Democratic People’s Party (DPP) do not give in or succumb to undemocratic actions which attack the political will or threaten the unity of our good people. We shall continue to explore all legitimate options to free our people from oppression, suppression and bad leadership. Our commitment to democracy and justice remains firm.

We support the call by our Party for calm and call on all our supporters maintain the peace even in the face of this extreme provocation. May I, on behalf of our effective grassroots campaign team, leaders, elders, women and youths sincerely thank all our people of Delta Central for their support and prayers. God bless you.

Thank you.

Chief Ede Dafinone
DPP Senatorial Candidate.

Delta Bye-election: Uduaghan says PDP deserves its victory

GOV. UDUAGHAN ATTRIBUTES PDP VICTORY AT  DELTA CENTRAL SENATORIAL BYE ELECTION TO STRONG WARD STRUCTURE AND UNITY ARISING FROM RECONCILIATION.
Following the announcement of the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate, Chief Emmanuel Aguariavwodo, as the winner of the Delta Central Senatorial District bye-election, Delta State Governor, Dr.Emmanuel Uduaghan has attributed the party’s victory at the polls to its strong ward structure.
Dr, Uduaghan who made this revelation on Sunday at a victory party held at his house in Warri, said that the victory had shown that the PDP had built a strong ward structure in the state, urging its members not go to sleep because of the victory, but rather work towards strengthening their wards.

He said; “We are here today and we are victorious. We must remain united and must not be carried away by this victory. More elections are coming. From this election it has shown that we have built a strong ward structure in Delta State, and that is what had given us the victory that we are celebrating today. Let us go back to our wards and strengthen them.”

He emphasized that ward chairmen were the most important party supporters in any party structure, urging all party members to support them and rally round them.

The Governor said that with the victory at the Delta Central Senatorial District bye-election, PDP has shown the whole world that they are the party to beat in any election, stressing that the party had reclaimed its lost mandate and its reconciliation moves had been successful.

He also reminded PDP party faithfuls that the party was supreme, saying that if the party had not projected them out, they should remain patient and faithful and stop jumping from one party to the other as their own time will come.

While congratulating Chief Aguariavwodo for his victory, Dr. Uduaghan advised him to always remember his root when he gets to the senate, stressing that he must bring the dividends of democracy to the Urhobo people.

He said; “May this not be the last time we are going to see you. Always find time to come back home and consult with your people so that when you go back you can fight for their rights. Go and bring all the dividends of democracy to your people.

On his part, the Delta Central Senatorial district winner, Chief Emmanuel Aguariavwodo, thanked the people of Delta Central for their support, promising that he was going to do his best in ensuring that he brings the dividends of democracy to his people.

Aguariavwodo also thanked Governor Uduaghan for his excellent leadership quality exhibited all throughout the election, saying that the victory was for the people of Delta Central  Senatorial district

The Delta State PDP Chairman, Chief Peter Nwaoboshi, who also spoke at the occasion, pleaded with PDP members to stop destroying themselves, noting that it was only when they house was divided that other parties can defeat them.

Chief Nwaoboshi also thanked the other PDP aspirant for their understanding, stressing that PDP would not have had the victory they were celebrating if the other aspirants had revolted against the party for not picking them.

Plan Crash: Oduah's comment shameful, Apostle Ogu

Apostle Ogu: Plane crash not act of God, result of govt inefficiency

A former Chairman of Rivers State Chapter of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Apostle Eugene Ogu, has slammed the Minister of Aviation, Ms Stella Oduah over her comment on last Friday's Associate Airlines plane crash.

The minister was quoted as saying the accident was inevitable and an act of God.

But Apostle Ogu described the statement as reckless and smirks of insensitivity to the griefs of those who lost loved ones in the October 3 crash.

"It is a shame that a high ranking government official like the Minister of Aviation would make such careless statement. If she lost a relative or child in that crash would she be saying that?

"The crash was not an act of God; it is a result of the recklessness of government officials like the minister, who are saddled with providing services to the people. She should apologise to Nigerians.

"We can avoid such accidents if the minister and other government officials face their jobs instead of hunting real and perceived opponents of the president. Did her job stop with suspending Rivers State Government plane?

"Are you not aware that an Air France plane killed seven cows in Port Harcourt? Was that also an act of God? So God sent the cows to the runway to be killed? She should apologise to Nigerians because she is not doing her job.

"So, Nigerians should equally accept that hundreds of souls who perish daily on our bad roads are acts of God?" Apostle Ogu queried.

Besides, the man of God accused the minister of being economical with the truth on the reasons adduced for the suspension of Dana Airlines licence.

He said over 70 passengers escaped death when the carrier's plane aborted a journey from Port Harcourt to Lagos because an engine parked up midday on Sunday.

"As I am talking to you now the airplane is at the (Port Harcourt) airport. It is marked 5-N-SAI. The minister is not telling the public the truth and that is a shame. Why did they allow that to happen before they ground the airline?"

“Soon, enlightened nations will put on
Trial those who had hitherto  ruled over them.
Kings shall flee into the deserts, into the company of the wild
Beast whom they resemble. And nature shall resume her rights.” {The prophesy of St. Jaust, just before the French Revolution}.
We need no eschatological clairvoyant to know that political-socio-economic vicissitudinary turgescency are inextricably intertwined with developmental strides in the life and times of any individual, State or Nation. Hence, the essayist  William Blake (1757-1827) posited in his “Proverbs of hell” that, “the man or nation  which never alters his / its opinion / state is like standing water and breeds reptiles of the mind’’ and corroborated by SCHILLER (1759-1805) in his Maid of Orleans that “that nation is worthless which does not joyfully stake everything in defense of her honor.
Whither goeth Nigeria after 53years of independence? I daresay say; it has being 53 years of hellishly scorching pains and horrendous spasms of agony.  53 years of a tale told by an idiot packed full of political, socio-economic sounds and furies signifying a superfluity of nothingness. 53 years of the leadership’s psychopathic prependalistic graft and kleptomaniacal corruption- no light, no roads, no schools, no education, no water, no fear of God, no jobs, no transportation, no joy and no happiness for 99% percent of Nigerians, except for politicians and their cohorts.
In Homers illiad, he did an encyclopedic and kaleidoscopic encapsulation of Nigerians and Nigeria after 53 years of independence. He said, “The gods(Nigerian Leaders) have so spun the thread for wretched mortals (Nigerians) that they must live in pains. “ Nigeria has earned over 1 quintillion pounds from its multidimensional revenue base since independence, but very little to show for it. The leaders (Executives and Legislators) at States and National levels have allocated psychotic jumbo salaries and allowances to themselves, whilst the vast majority of Nigerians luxuriate in grandiloquent abject and scorching poverty.
It is a hackneyed truism, that when the choreographer loses his terpsichorean wits and the Conductor his dexterity, the dancers and the Members of the Philharmonic orchestra become cocooned in contretemps and salmagundi. This scenario has been the bane of the Nigerian nation since 1960 till date.
The multifaceted political, socio-economic engineering processes conceptualized and implemented without sincerity of purpose and messianic zeitgeist by the military junta and so-called democratically elected government has left Nigeria cascading down the gerdarene slope of crass socio-economic underdevelopment and the schismatic road to Yugoslavia.
The kingdoms and geographical expressions of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes was renamed Yugoslavia in 1929- and was run as a highly centralized “Greater Serbia” The country was befuddled and bedraggled by political and nationalist schisms and Croats separatists murdered  king Alexander in 1934. It was attacked and dismembered by Hitter in 1941 and also bemused and submerged in intra and inter political wars against the NAZIS and itself.
The communist-led partisans of Josep Broz Tito (1892 - 1980) emerged victorious in 1945, and reformed Yugoslavia along Soviet lines. Expelled by Stalin from the Soviet bloc in 1948 on account of political and ideological indiscipline. The Yugoslavia communists rejected Soviet model, and pursued policies of decentralization, worker’s self-management and non – alignment. However, after Tito’s death in 1980, the Yugoslavia Federation/Confederation, unity and ideological experiment failed and became sunken in the quagmire of political and nationalist crises.
The wealthier northern republics of Slovenia and Croatia edged and opted for democracy and Western European political models while Serbia forcefully resisted the separatist aspirations of Albanian nationalists in Kosovo Province in 1990. The communist conceded principle of free elections and every nation went their way with pockets of resistance in some areas till today.
The vertical and horizontal integration of the history of Yugoslavia has become necessary in the light of what Nigeria has been passing through as a Nation since 1960 till date. The inability of the Leadership to fight corruption and solidify nation cohesion has given rise to ethnocentric lebensraum, parochial irredentism, socio-political zeitgeist, tribalism, religions wars and militancy.  We have ethnic  nationalities and Geo-political Zones been represented  by militant groups and others like, Arewa, Afenifere, Ohaneze Ndigbo, Urhobo Progress Union(UPU) and political / religious  Militant Groups like Boko Haram, Egbesu Cult, Liberation Movement of Urhobo people, Massob, OPC etc shows that Nigeria is on the road to Yugoslavia.
To salvage Nigeria from this labyrinth, we have to call our politicians to order in the light of 2015. The way and manner they are going about trying to actualize their political ambitions snacks of the truism that the Nigerian Nation will be “Antediluvian History” on, before or after 2015. The demon of political rascality and horrendous leadership impunity must be deracinated from our body-politick hook, line and sinker. Let our leaders redefine the contours of politics from “strife of interests masquerading as a contest of principles. The conduct of public affairs for private advantage” (The Devils Dictionary) and “Politicians are like the bones of a horse’s for shoulder - not a straight one in it” (Wendell Phillips) to “politics is the doctrine of the possible, the attainable” [Otto Von Bismarck].
The political parties, especially the PDP, must put it’s house in order and stop hitting the polity. President Jonathan must give a patriotic, sagacious and perspicuous, consideration on whether to drop his political ambition to contest the 2015 Presidential election or not to contest in the interest of peace, Unity and continues existence of Nigeria as a Nation.
We must convene a National Conference of Ethic Nationalities and not a Sovereign National Conference. There must be serious economic strategy to ameliorate poverty in Nigeria and the enhancement of service delivery of all welfare and social   agencies to the citizenry.
The continuous existence of Nigeria as a Nation remains a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma superimposed in a conundrum. Are Nigerians and Nigeria prepared to remain as one sovereign, united, indissoluble and progress-oriented country? The leadership must be prepared to take the bull of true unity, progress and development by the horns. The leadership must be patriotic and altruistic and must be prepared to see the Nigerian Nation as their unprejudiced and unbiased single constituency.
The vast majority of poverty-stricken and oppressed Nigerians are already asking in words of Williams Shakespeare that ‘NIGERIA’, “To be or not to be: that is the question: whether it is nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or take arms against a sea of troubles, and by opposing, end them.”Nigerians are sick and tired of the political brouhaha and socio-economic hara-kiri they have been suffering since 1960 that is 53 years ago. We have fought a civil war and experienced strikes and civil unrest over these same issues. Yet, we are yet learn about the nuts and bolts of NATIONHOOD.
Finally, in words of the great humanist and orator Martin Luther King, Jr.r5t “Let nobody fool you, all the loud noises we hear today are nothing but the death groans of thee dying system. The old order is passing away, the new order is coming into being. But whenever there is anything new there are new responsibilities. As we think of this coming new world we must think of the challenge that we confront and the new responsibilities that stand before us. We must prepare to live in a new world”
Nigeria is on the road to Yugoslavia!!! Unless something drastically draconian is done.

Kelvin of Kokori: Women go naked to protest military operation

**Attack soldiers

Troops moving into Kokori

Reports from the community indicated that the about 100 naked protesters were unhappy that their husbands have fled the community due to the military operation launched in the wake of the arrest of notorious criminal, Kelvin Oniarah.
It was gathered that naked young and old protesters defied soldiers who were deployed to the community in the wake of Friday’s attack on the palace of the Ovie of Agbon Kingdom, HRM Ogurimerime Ukori 1, by armed youths suspected to be members of the notorious kidnap kingpin’s gang.
A source from the community said, “The women number about 100, they are singing mourning songs about the fate of Kokori.”
“They said the soldiers who prevented their husband from coming home should come and sleep with them and perform the duties of their husbands,” a source from the community told our reporter on telephone.
The Commanding Officer of Sector 1 command of the JTF, Lt. Colonel Ifeanyi Otu, could not be reached for comment.

Kelvin of Kokori: Why youths attacked Agbon king

Part 4

Why Kelvin's gang members attacked monarch

Fresh facts emerged yesterday on Friday's attack on the palace of Ovie of Agbon Kingdom in Kokori, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State, HRM Ogurimerime, Ukori1, by armed youths suspected to be members of Kelvin Oniarah-led gang.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in next Saturday's Delta Central Senatorial District Bye-election, Chief Emmanuel Aguarivwodo, Ukori 1 and the Ovie of Oruarivie-Abraka, Akpomeyoma Majoroh, Ojeta II, and at least two members of the House of Representatives narrowly escaped death in the attack.
The PDP team was in the monarch's palace when armed youths, suspected to be members of Kelvin Oniarah-led gang in the area, locked them inside the expansive palace and opened fire on them.
The Nation gathered that the attack was targeted at the embattled monarch of the crime-ridden community, HRM Ogurimerime Ukori 1, whose whereabouts was unknown at the time of this report.
No fewer than 20 cars, including two security Toyota Hilux vans, were either burnt or smashed by the rampaging armed gang.
The Urhobo community had been embroiled in crisis since last Wednesday when Oniarah, who is fingered for numerous high profile kidnap and other nefarious crimes in and around the state was arrested in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Our investigation revealed that the target of the Friday's attack was the Kokori monarch and some PDP stalwarts, fingered for the arrest of Oniarah.
Rumour had been rife in the kingdom that the crime lord was setup by the monarch allegedly under the pretext of arranging a meeting that would bring peace to his beleaguered kingdom.
Besides, it was gathered that a section Kokori youths were unhappy that while the community was embroiled in crisis and people were suffering from the pang of military invasion, their monarch was playing host to members of the PDP.
"The problem in Kokori was caused in the first place by the PDP, who armed these boys and used them to rig elections into their various offices. The monarch too was installed by the PDP, we all know that," a community source stated.
Our source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, "We all know that the king (Ukori 1) is or was a member of the PDP, he served on the board of Niger Cat under Ibori (former Governor James Ibori), a PDP governor."
Speaking in the same vein, another source, in a telephone conversation with our reporter, said, "The (PDP) rally was disrupted by some aggrieved youths of Kokori. Their grievance was that rather than using his position to find lasting solution to the suffering of his people, he (monarch) was only interested in the success of his political party."
Meanwhile, there was uneasy calm in the community on Saturday in the wake of Friday's violence and subsequent takeover of the community by troops.

Kelvin of Kokori: The Saga Continues

Kelvin of Kokori Part 3: Armed youths go on rampage

*20 cars smashed, burnt

A burning police Hilux van
Fresh violence rocked Kokori Community in Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State on Friday morning when supporters of alleged notorious kidnapped kingpin and leader of armed robbery syndicate, Kelvin Oniarah, went on rampage

Peoples Democratic Party senatorial candidate, Chief Emmanuel Aguariavwodo and two first class monarchs narrowly escaped death when armed militias  opened fire on the palace of the Ovie of Agbon Kingdom, Ogurimerime Ukori 1, in the town.

The
armed hoodlums, numbering over 30, are believed to be members of the criminal empire under the overlord of notorious armed robbery and kidnap kingpin, Kelvin Oniarah.

The attack came about one week after troops came under intense gunfire from the gang in the wake of Oniarah's arrested last Wednesday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Eyewitnesses said over 20 vehicles on the entourage of the PDP Chieftain, who was on a  campaign trail for next Saturday's Delta Central Senatorial bye-election in the state, were destroyed.

Two Toyota Hilux vans carrying security agents were set on fire by the criminals.

It was gathered that  HRM Ogurimerime Ukori 1 and his ‎Abraka counterpart, HRM Majoroh were receiving Aguariavwodo's team when the armed hoodlum opened fire on the palace.

Security agents, including mobile policemen attached to the politician and other party stalwarts were overpowered by the rampaging gang members.

The mobile policemen ‎reportedly joined other guests in beating hasty retreat from the onslaught of the hoodlums.

It was gathered that Aguariavwodo, the two kings and over 100 others were held hostage by the gunmen for about one hour before the Commanding Officer of 222 Battalion of the Nigerian Army, Lt Col VC Ibeh led a rescue mission that freed them.

A source in the PDP's aspirant team said, "It was traumatic. We got there a few minutes late and the meeting was just commencing with the traditional presentation of kola nuts when we heard heavy report of gunfire."

The incident was the second of its nature in about a week since the most notorious kidnap suspect, Kelvin Oniarah was arrested by operatives of the Department of State Security last Wednesday.

PDP Youth Leader in the state, Arthur Akpowowo, who was part of the team, confirmed the report in a telephone chat with our reporter.

He said, "We were in the palace, the monarch was welcoming us (campaign team) in our (Urhobo) traditional way with kola nut when the shooting started. It was about 10:30 and they started shooting and destroying people's car parked outside the palace."

Akpowowo‎ said after some time there was respite from the heavy staccato of gun fire, prompting guests who parked their cars outside to go and rush them into the palace's expansive yard.

"After some time, they c‎ame back and started burning people's car outside. After a long while the CO of Agbarha (222 Battalion) came and led the people out of the town. As am speaking with  yo‎u now the soldiers are leading us out through Isiokolo", he added.

...Emerhor Condemns attack on Aguariavwodo

Meanwhile, All Progressives Congress (APC ) candidate, Olorogun O’tega Emerhor yesterday condemned the attack in the strongest term.

Aguariavwodo - caught in the crossfire
Speaking to journalists at Ewu in Ughelli South Local Government Area of the state,  Olorogun Emerhor  urged the people of the district to shun violence in the forthcoming senatorial election and any election in the state.

He said; “While in this campaign train it has come to our notice that our fellow contestant and candidate of the PDP, Chief Aguariawodo Emmanuel went on a Campaign trip to Ethiope East, somewhere near Kokori and there was some violence. We do not have the full details of that violence. We just heard that his entourage was attacked. We want to make it clear that we of the APC do not support violence.”

We strongly condemned what we heard happened there. We want a level playing ground for all candidates. We do not ask, request, or tolerate any person, including our supporters engaging in acts of violence, as we also ask for a fair playing ground from all that is concerned.

"We condemn this act, even though we do not have the full details, in very strong terms,” he further stated.

KELVIN OF KOKORI: When Armed youths, troops clash

Kelvin Oniarah: Tale of a Kokori criminal

*13 feared dead after Kelvin’s arrest

Soldiers searching a shrine in the town
No fewer than 13 persons were feared dead in Wednesday’s bloody clash between the Joint Task Force (JTF) troops and armed youths loyal to kidnap and robbery kingpin Kelvin Prosper Oniarah (aka Ibruvwe) in Kokori, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State.
Oniarah, who was arrested by operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) and JTF in an undisclosed hotel in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital. Some of his victims were Chief Mike Ozekhome and a former Anambra Deputy Governor, Dr. Chudi Nwike, who was killed in captivity.
Troops deployed in Kokori to secure the town shortly after his arrest on Wednesday came under intense gunfire, leading to a shootout that lasted for over three hours before the youths were overpowered.
Oniarah’s close associate identified as Charles and a juju priest, Michael Omonigho, who is believed to be the gang’s spiritual head, were arrested.
Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, who addressed reporters yesterday in Warri, confirmed the arrest, saying one person died in the clash. The Nation learnt that the governor relied on information provided by security operatives and a body retrieved from the scene.

Our independent investigation revealed that the death toll was higher than one. The body recovered from Kokori on Wednesday night has been taken to Effurun Barracks headquarters of the Sector 1 Command of the JTF.
A reliable security source involved in the operation, told our reporter: “The armed youths killed were at least 13; some of the bodies were dragged from the scene and taken to an unknown location by their colleagues.”
Our source, who craved anonymity, added that at least 25 youths of the town escaped with gunshot wounds.
It was gathered that two of the troops’ Hilux vans used for Wednesday’s operation were damaged by the hoodlums, who attempted to set them on fire by shooting the fuel tanks repeatedly.

“Luckily for us, the tank was made of plastic. They were able to destroy the tyres and we had to move the vehicle out of the town with flat tyres before fixing it,” a JTF source, who was part of the team, told our reporter.
Our reporter counted at least four bullet holes on a van marked DT-Jul-019.
At least 15 vehicles of various brands were smashed and burnt in the town; although it could not be ascertained if the destruction was carried out by the soldiers or the rampaging youths.
Operation clean-up Kokori
As a follow up to Wednesday’s incident, the 3 and 222 battalions of the Nigerian Army in Effurun-Warri and Agbarha-Otor, yesterday began a military operation to rid Kokori and neighbouring communities of remnants of Kelvin’s gang members.
Troops were also deployed to man the Orhioke-Kokori crude oil well head and manifold in the area, apparently to prevent the rampaging youths from making good their threat to set it on fire.
The operation was led by Lt.-Col Ifeanyi Otu (3 Battalion) and Lt. Col VC Ibeh of 222 Battalion.
It began with an address by Lt.-Col. Otu at about 9:35am, in front of the Isiokolo Police Divisional Headquarters and a brief workout before the troops moved into Kokori.
Lt.-Col Otu laid out the rules of engagement, warning the troops against indiscriminate use of firearms and force.

He added: “Fire control, discipline must be maintained at all times and you must remain focussed.”
At about 10:05am, 19 Toyota Hilux vans and one Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), conveying over 100 soldiers and policemen, stormed the town.
The town was almost completely deserted, except for a handful of aged women and children who were too weak to flee.
Our reporter saw two crying children: the eldest, who is about five-year-old, identified himself as Onini. He said his parents fled on sighting the troops leaving him and his younger sibling behind.
Our correspondent, who witnessed the operation, reported that although Kokori was like a ghost town, remnants of Kelvin’s gang remained and caused problems for the troops.
The gang mounted roadblocks on the Market Road entrance to the town and dared the security operatives to cross them and move towards their hideout at the end of the town.
They also barricaded entrances to major streets with coffins and made sacrifices from dead animals and chicken, ostensibly to deter the advancing troops.
A soldier on patrol in the deserted town
A midsize truck, which apparently conveyed drinks to the town, was seized and the bottles it was carrying broken and scattered on the road to restrict movement.
The truck was also set ablaze and its carcass used to block the road.
One of those remaining in the community, Mr. Stephen Onokayime, told our reporter that he was not part of the criminal operation.
He said he tried to dissuade the youths, adding: “They refused to listen to me.”
Uduaghan imposes dusk-to-dawn curfew on Kokori
Uduaghan vowed that the military operation would continue until all remnants of Kelvin’s men and their supporters were arrested.
He said: “The overall objective (of military operation) is to flush out the criminal gangs, get their arms and ammunition and restore normalcy to the town.”
He imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on the town, saying nobody should be found outside the community once it is past 6pm.
Uduaghan advised persons living in communities, such as Eku, Abraka and others to ensure that they did not move about aimlessly.
The governor lamented that the people of Kokori backed the criminals, saying: “It is a shame that Kokori women came out dancing with their children holding guns. In other places, women dance with their graduating children.”
He said innocent people would be spared, adding that all must bear some pains to wrest the town from the hoodlums.
The governor assured oil companies of adequate security, urging them to ignore the threat of the so-called Liberation Movement of Urhobo People.
How Kelvin was arrested
Fresh facts obtained by our reporter revealed how Kelvin, whose operations reportedly spread across the Niger Delta and beyond, was nabbed on Wednesday. His car was bugged and a tracker installed.
Contrary to initial report that he was tracked after last Wednesday’s 60-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, The Nation authoritatively gathered that security operatives had been on his trail at least two weeks before the declaration.
It was gathered that a section of the security services was blanked out from the investigations because of concerns that some of them may have been compromised by the gang.
A top official of the DSS said Kelvin escaped arrest for so long by shunning a luxury lifestyle and moving about in taxis and vans.
“He usually drove around in rickety vehicles used as taxi. That way he was able to avoid drawing attention to himself. That was how he was able to beat all checkpoints around the area.”
Besides, it was gathered that the JTF narrowly missed arresting him months ago, when he killed two of his close friends who he accused of giving information to the security apparatus of the state government.
“What he did was to get the phone of those his aides and he dialled the number of some security top shots who he knew were working on his case. He was surprised to find that the boys had the number. Without wasting time, he wasted them both,” our source said.
It was gathered that the death of the two moles hampered investigations until the SSS stepped in, infiltrated his camp and bugged his car.
Kelvin implicates top security operatives, traditional leaders
Victims of 'War': Children abandoned by their fleeing parents in Kokori
The kidnap kingpin has reportedly made earth-quaking confessional statements, implicating a high-ranking military officer in the state, police top brass, prominent politicians and community leaders.
“From what we have heard, heads may roll if the confessions made by Kelvin so far turn out to be true, because he said so many things and implicated so many people, including a very high-ranking officer of the Nigerian Army,” a source said yesterday.
Asked to comment on the alleged involvement of politicians in funding and arming the hoodlum yesterday, Uduaghan said a full-scale investigation would be conducted, adding: “At the end of the day, the full story of Kevlin will be told. Let us not be biased at this moment.”
Uduaghan hinted that heads could roll in Agbon Kingdom and Kokori, where he said Kelvin was backed by his kinsmen.
The governor said: “We (government and the monarch) are having very deep discussions. We are in touch with the king. We believe that certain persons in that community (Kokori) have questions to answer. No matter how big or how high they are, we will fish them out.”

Kelvin Oniarah: Tale of a Kokori criminal

KELVIN OF KOKORI SERIES - PART 1

On Wednesday, September 19, Delta State most wanted criminal, Kelvin Ibruvwe reportedly made a surprise return to his Kokori hometown in Ethiope East LGA and in his arrest in early. We chronicle the criminal career of the hoodlum known as Kelvin of Kokori

Since his criminal escapades propelled him into the top list of Niger Deltan most wanted criminal, Kelvin Ibruvwe, had become a mystery of sort. He is so popularly that he is known simply by his first name. He is not unlike Lawrence Anini, the infamous Nigerian armed robbery kingpin whose fame and notoriety spread through the country in the mid-80s.

Kelvin and LiMUP
Scores of verified and unverified sorties were attributed to him, so much so that he became known as the cat with nine lives.

Kelvin's notoriety as a crime lord was cemented in 2012 when his brazen kidnap operation and deadly high profile armed robbery operation in Warri, Eku, Abraka and other parts of state. He was also fingered as the ring leader of a vast kidnap syndicate which operation spread beyond the state.

He singlehanded placed his Kokori home town, one of the sub-clans that make up Agbon Kingdom in Ethiope East Local Government Area, on the world map, but for the wrong reason. The town has been tagged the headquarters of kidnappers in the Niger Delta region.

Reliable police sources said eight of every 10 robbery operations in the Osubi-Eku- Agbor axis of the state were either planned in Kokori or executed by gunmen trained by the young man.

The reputation of the Urhobo town was not helped by reports that some prominent chiefs were shielding him and his criminal gangs from the law. He was declared wanted by the Delta State Police Command earlier this year. The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ikechukwu Aduba, said the efforts of the police to arrest him were thwarted by community leaders in the area.

As bloody as he had been, Kelvin outperformed himself when he led a team to secure the release of his ally and fellow kidnap suspect, who was awaiting trial at the Okere prison in Warri. Rufus, the suspect, and other suspects were being taken by wardens for a court appearance when the accosted them and opened fire on the prison vehicle, killing at least three wardens and two civilians before freeing their man.

Their getaway was as loud as the operation: they shot their way through the heavy traffic from Okere Road, through the NPA Expressway to Effurun Roundabout, where they left trails of blood, bloodied victims, bullet-riddled cars and thousands of panic-stricken residents in their wake.

One Kingdom, two monarchs

The reign of the crime lord went side by side with that of the Agbon monarch, HRM Ogurimerime, Ukori I. Reliable sources in the kingdom said the pronouncement of the 20something year-old hoodlum carried more weight that of the monarch, who the state governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, delayed presentation of a staff of office because of the atrocities of Kelvin.

Worried by the disgrace his activities had brought to the kingdom, leaders of the area decided to act. In one of their meetings over the sordid state of affairs and the disgrace of being tagged 'Kidnappers Kingdom', they met. Some suggested that the criminal should be rounded up and handed to the law. Days after, at least two of those who backed call for Kelvin's arrest in the meeting were shot dead, sang froid, in broad day light.

The incident led to concern among well-meaning members of the kingdom that there the criminal had infiltrated the ranks and files of the kingdom and justified CP Aduba's claim that members of Kokori and neighbouring communities were shielding the criminal from the law.

The criminals also ambushed and slaughtered at least one soldier and wounded three others attached to a Joint Task Force (JTF) checkpoint in one of the roads leading to the town.

In response, the task force invade and threw a thick cordon of security personnel round the town. The Commander of 3 Battalion of the Nigeria Army, Lt Col Ifeanyi Otu personally led several operations to snare Kelvin

The suffocating presence of security personnel in the town brought a brief respite, which led to Governor Uduaghan presenting the staff of office to James Omeru, a former Chairman of Niger Cat Construction Company, who had been selected as the Ovie of Agbon Kingdom. He adopted the title Ogurimerime Ukori I.

Last ditch amnesty ploy and Liberation Movement of Urhobo People rally

Still the security forces, including JTF, police and State Security Service (SSS), continued an intensive manhunt for the renegade. Sources in the area said Kelvin was confined to a section of the forest in the area, where usually moved in the dead of the night. A newspaper report, which speculated that the wanted criminal had sneaked out of the country to the Republic of Benin, later turned out to be untrue.

The Nation reliably gathered that when security dragnet closed in on him, Kelvin made desperate effort to top official of the state government. "He offered to surrender if the government would be granted him amnesty," our source said.

It was gathered that Governor Uduaghan, who was approached about the offer turned it down, insisting that Kelvin had committed too many atrocities and killed too many innocent persons to get a soft landing.

It was in the midst of his desperate effort for immunity from his crimes that he allegedly resurfaced in Kokori on Thursday, September 19 to declare his preparedness to fight for the emancipation of the Urhobo people.

He gave the Federal Government 60 day ultimatum to meet his demands in order to avert disaster. The story was that he stormed the community with masked youths armed with dangerous weapons. He was reportedly welcome by hundreds of dancing women and children, who described him as their saviour and a freedom fighter.

When our reporter visited Kokori community in the wake of the report, the community was calm, but the prevailing peace was the eerie graveyard type.

The three entry points through Eku, Isiokolo and Orogun were all manned by either stern-faced soldiers or policemen.  There were also several security checkpoints manned by police as well as motorized patrols by troops. A military post at the popular Isiokolo junction leading to Agbon clan a few kilometers away watches activity into the community.

As one approaches the community through the Isiokolo axis, tension pervade in the air, so thick it could be felt. Although residents went about their daily business, the air of unease and apprehension was tangible.

The people were friendly, until our reporter mentioned his name. Friendly, smiling faces became inscrutable mask; sociable smiles become scowl or burning glare.

Several residents we tried to interview rebuffed the offer and even feigned ignorance of the reported media briefing by “Kelvin of Kokori”. Those who volunteered information swore that there was a rally at Erijere Primary School, which they did not attend.

"I was not there, but my brothers' friend said he was there and he saw Kelvin," a source in the town volunteered.

One of the reporters who 'witnessed' the ground-shaking event also could not provide our reporter with satisfactory information on the event. When asked if he indeed saw Kelvin, the reporter said, "I didn’t see him completely because they wore mask. But I knew it must be him (Kelvin) because his mask was different from the others and it marked him out as their leader."

Similarly, our efforts to get in touch with a 'chief' who reportedly spoke with reporters at the rally proved abortive. Nobody in Kokori seemed to know the woman whose face donned the pages of some national dailies last Friday.

Kelvin, a Robin Hood

However, an unemployed youth, who simply identified himself as Mudiaga, advised the government to pay heed to the demands of the militant group by bringing development to the community, adding that unemployment was pervasive.

Those familiar with the activities of the hoodlum said he was very free with money. One of his kinsmen described him as a 'cheerful giver'. "He doles out money freely and those in his good books enjoy him very well."

When I asked my interviewee how it is possible for a major event such as purportedly occurred in the community, he accused the security agencies of working hand in glove with the kidnap kingpin.

But a prominent Urhobo leader denied that the ethnic leaders condoned the activities of the criminal. He said they were afraid for their lives.

"It is not right to expect that a kingdom with high intellectual leaders like Kokori is comfortable with what is happening. But people are afraid to speak out because of fear of the unknown. We are afraid of Kelvin, the government and security agencies," he said.

End of the Road

The end came for Kelvin on Wednesday morning, when a crack team from the Department of State Security (DSS) from Abuja stormed the region to put an end to his bravado.

Ironically, it was gathered that the effrontery of the ultimatum quickened the operation. Reliable sources said the topmost echelon of the nation's security network were unnerved by the deadline and felt it was time to deal with the situation once and for all.

"The team from Abuja worked closely with the State Security Service, Asaba, which detailed a top official of the service in Warri to lead the local team."

It was gathered that Kelvin was trailed to Port Harcourt, in Rivers State, where he was apprehended at about 3:30am.

"When the team got to the hotel, they monitored him for several hours, possibly days, before the zoomed in on the target. When it was confirmed that he was locked in his room, the team sent for military backup.

At about the same time, a heavy detachment from the 3 Battalion, Effurun Barracks of the Nigeria Army, embarked on a convert operation in Kokori, his hometown. It was gathered that troops on ground where not given details of the operation, ostensibly to avoid compromise.

"When it was confirmed that the criminal had been arrested, the team on ground moved in with immediate reinforcement from neighbouring battalions.

When our reporter visited Kokori at about noon on Wednesday, a long convoy of combat-ready security operatives dressed in the all-black attire of the DSS was seen moving into the town through the Eku entry point.

Among those arrested by security operatives on Wednesday afternoon was a juju priest, who is believed to be the spiritual head of the criminal gang led by the notorious criminal, and several other youths, some of whom reportedly opened fire on security operatives to prevent the arrest of their leaders.

Reports that scores of persons, possibly youths of the communities died in the attack could not be independently confirmed at the time of this report on Wednesday evening.
Inhabitants of the hitherto sleepy town were however hoping that the staccato of gunfire would ebb out and bring the much needed peace, which has eluded Kokori in the past one year.
