RSUST FINAL YEAR LAW STUDENTS DOCKED FOR EXAM MALPRACTICE

RSUST final year law students in examination malpractice mess
…arraigned in court
A chief magistrate court in Port Harcourt yesterday docked two final year law students of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Nkporlu for alleged examination malpractices.
The duo, a male and a female (names withheld), aged 33 and 23 years, were reportedly caught cheating in the exam hall during the ongoing Faculty of Law final examination.
They pleaded not guilty to the charges and were granted bail in the sum of N100, 000 each by the trial magistrate, Mr. E.C. Woke.
Earlier the defence lawyer Mr. I.B Edwin had applied for the bail of the accused persons saying that they were yet taking their final year examination, and had been in detention since Monday.
He noted that the offence they were charged with is bailable, adding that the court should exercise its discretion and grant them bail in the most lenient conditions.
The prosecution, led by inspector Godwin Nwinam, did not object to the application. The case was later adjourned for hearing.
Nation Evening Express reported plan by the RSUST authority to fast track examination for final year students of the faculty of law of the institution to save the student from being caught in the proposed strike action by Academic Staff Union of University in the institute.
The RSUST Branch of ASUU is unhappy with the re-appointment of Prof. Barineme Fakae as the Vice Chancellor of the school by the state governor, Rt. Hon. Romiti Chibuike Amaechi.
The lectures have planned to proceed on an indefinite strike from the 12th of this month if Amaechi does not reverse the re-appointment, which they described as a rape on due process.
The final year law examination was scheduled between Monday 6th of this month and the 12th to enable the students proceed to law schools with their counterparts from other institutions.
Meanwhile, Prof. Fakae and seven other newly appointed administrative members of the school were admitted to an oath of office by Amaechi at the state Government House yesterday.
